then tonight a freeze warning and a frost advisory is likely. numbers will be dropping throughout the early evening hours. we are talking about an extended period of dry weather but the air mass will modify. we will talk about that and have a look at the seven-day forecast coming up. >> as lisa told you, we are notice middle of a cold spell. time to bundle up, bring in the pets and cover-up the plants. we are joined with the latest with kira klapper. good morning, kira. >> well, carolyn, the latest is it is very cold. i guess the only redeeming quality, as lisa said, is that it is dry. it's not raining. that's really nice. there's a security guard here in front of whole foods, and he is patrolling the area but he's ducking into his car in between. he said it's just too cold to stay outside. speaking of the cold, let's take you to some video we have last night in petaluma where

residents were dubbing inside to stay away from the cold. there are icicle lights, christmas lights, that look like real he is cells. and an employee at an ice cream shop was left with no customers, as you can imagine. and tour efforts, who thought california was always warm and sunny, were surprised by the cold. >> i have the heater cranked up really high and brought extra blankets and are trying to get through it. >> it's been bitter cold since we arrived. the wind, the rain, ice, i thought i was back home. >> also in this cold, the california highway patrol is warning about icy conditions as temperatures drop. black eyes may form on bridges, overcrossings. they said you should let off the ice slowly if you hit the ice and don't hit the brakes or you

will get into a tailspin. we hope you are all careful if you are headed out. reporting live, kira klapper, abc7 news. thanks, kira. it was cold out at the stick last night but who cares. 49ers of saferring victory this morning and later today they find out who they will play in the quest for their sixth super bowl. last night's win over the green bay packers was a record night for quarterback colin kaepernick. here he is making a 56-yard touchdown run. he ran for 180 yards, also threw for 263, and two touchdowns. the 49ers advance to the nfc championship game for the second year in a row with their 45-33 win over the green bay packers. mike shumann will have much more later in sports. right any ears abc7 news reporter john alston with fan reaction from candlestick park.

uprising that ended his rule. the ruling also grants a new trial to mubarak's security chief who is serving a life sentence for his conviction on the same charges >> new this morning hugh has been rights groups will have protests around the bay area today marking the 11th anniversary of the guantanamo bay detention camp. some prisoners have been held without charges for ten years now. protest groups said they can't wait. they will set out from both ends of the golden gate bridge. they will meet in the middle for a vigil. before that they plan to read the names of all 166 guantanamo prisoners and at 2:00 this afternoon a separate day of action is planned in palo alto by members of amnesty international. coming up at 8:00 this morning, abc's george stephanopoulos hosts two powerhouse round tables taking

reached as far as background checks for criminals and mental health records but he thinks the administration is having the meetings for show. >> it was constructive dialogue but i think they had their mind made up when they came into the meeting. >> the task force on guns is expected to present their recommendations by the end of the month. templeton said he expects about 8,000 people here at the cow palace on sunday and also expects to sell out of ammunition. in daly city, abc7 news. in petaluma hundreds of people remembered the teenager whose body was found in the snow in south lake tahoe earlier this month. yesterday there was a public memorial for 19-year-old alyssa byrne as casa grande day high school. friends and family gathered in the gym at her old high school, many wearing her favorite color, pink. they came to pay their respects and share their memories. >> i think that's how she would want to be remembered. she would want us to laugh and kind of be like -- i don't want

be careful if you are heading out early and bundle up. this cold air is here to stay for the next couple of days. in fact another freeze warning and fast advisory will be likely tonight. so a live look outside from our east bay camera. we have the radiational cooling. the live 7hd, he we are looking at fog in the north bay around santa rosa with half-mile visibility n the north bay not only the colder temperatures, but some of that fog. here is where the freeze warnings are until 8:00. from the north bay, our east bay valleys, even the santa clara valley where temperatures are dropping into the mid-20s. after sunrise, really not until 9:00, will we see modifying the temperatures. and the frost advisory, the bay shoreline. numbers in san francisco are milder, but elsewhere, wow, we are continuing to drop this

morning. 27 in concord, 27 in novato. redwood city, 30 for you, as well as san jose. so with another two to three degrees of cooling, certainly it will be a very, very cold night and not much change for your monday morning. but look at san francisco, 40 here. tonight we will see some more wind, but it will still be really cold until the middle of the week when this cold parcel of air begins to modify as our ridge of high pressure brings a also more wind and we see the warmer air mass. 8 degrees colder this morning in napa. 5 degrees colder in fremont and fairfield. san francisco about the same, as well as our coastline. so our highlights then, freezing temperatures this morning. sunny days and cold nights right on through about tuesday. and then by wednesday and thursday not only will we warm up, we will see temperatures a little bit above average. by the end of the work week some 60s come into play. we have high pressure in the eastern pacific, bringing that

welcome back, everyone. in morning france is on alert for a possible terrorist attack following military action in africa. french troops were on the move yesterday from the country of chad to mali as french aircraft pound islamist rebel bases. france sent planes and troops to mali after an appeal from that country's president. the mali rebels are link today al-qaeda. the concern is they are using mali as a base to attack the west. they will increase protection at their public buildings and transportation hubs. all across this country people are lining up at doctors offices, pharmacies and clinics and he trying to get vaccinate today to stay one step ahead of a flu epidemic. at the same time more and more

hospitals are cracking down on their health workers who are refusing flu shots. a. bc news reports. >> the flu epidemic sweeping the country is forcing more government action. new york governor andrew cuomo declared a public health emergency on saturday. order allows pharmacists to immunize children and it comes as the number of influenza cases is nearing 20,000 in the state, more than four times the cases reported during last year's flu season. hospitals are overwhelmed. >> we are setting records in the urgent care center in terms of the number patients are seeing per day. >> and it's about spreading a mass spread of those most at risk. >> we are trying to keep them in their rooms. >> patients across the country are suffering. >> i've been in bed for about five, six days. >> since then she has gotten a flu shot, but others aren't so lucky. some hospitals and doctors are running out of flu vaccine.

the flu season. based on that they determine where the flu is circulating and with i countries are hardest hit. this morning the treasury department said the trillion dollars coin idea to solve the debt crisis is off the table. some of president barack obama's liberal ally as has been promoting it. the trillion dollars coin fast and draw the funds to pay bills should congress fail to raise the debt ceiling. treasury officials say it's illegal to mint a coin for a purpose like that. he's considered one of the greatest cyclists of all-time but hanging over his head are charges of doping to achieve that success. well now lance armstrong may be coming clean about drug use during his tour de france races. abc news reporter mark greenblat has the latest. >> in his last interview with oprah nearly two years ago, lance armstrong got a hero's welcome. now disgraced and labeled as a cheater, he will face a much tougher audience when he sits

she receives a $50,000 college scholarship. miss south carolina was the runner-up. tomorrow on abc7 good morning america, robin roberts has a big announcement sure to make you smile. good morning america against tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. here on abc7. new this morning, the tracy fire department will soon be giving away knew child safety seats to families in need. our media partner, the san jose mercury news, reports a grant from the state office of traffic safety will cover the cost of 275 children's car seats. that's more than $26,000 worth. the fire chief reported recently to the city council that his department is seeing a lot of improperly installed car seats, recalled seats or just plane broken car seats. a public checkup event is being held next saturday from one to three at the parker avenue entrance of el pescadero park.

us on the abc7 news. this is a live look from our roof cam showing you the ferry building there. san francisco, the temperature right now is 40 degrees. that's balmy compared to the rest of the bay area. our meteorologist lisa argen will be along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. there's a month-long snake hunt underway in florida. hundreds of amateur hunters have embarked on the 2030 python challenge. florida wildlife officials launched the hunt to eliminate some of the 150,000 nonnative burmese pythons living in the everglades. they say such a drastic plan was necessary to keep the snakes from damaging the ecosystem too severely. >> we need to think outside the box and do something that's never been done before. >> the hunt who are captures the most snakes will receive a $1,500.00 prize. the python challenge lasts for a month. a new technology is offering hope for an uncomfortable

condition that affects an estimated 14 million people in the country. it can take a severe toll on everything from your vision to quality of life. here's carolyn johnson with the details. >> on a bad day, even driving can be a challenge for helen cole. >> the hardest part about driving is seeing the signs clearly and it adds a distinctive glare of buriness. >> while her normal vision is fine, the blurriness comes from a condition called dry eye. she's forced to treat it throughout the day. >> from the time you get up in the morning your eyes already feel gritty, sometimes they are swollen. definitely red and they have a burning sensation. >> you have a relatively low oil here. >> the opt tommologist said the condition is often caused by a lack of oil which allows the eye's natural shape pour to evaporate. he is going to treat it with a

new technology called bipiflow. first they perform a laser scan of her eyes to measure the amount and quality of the oil, as well as her natural pattern of blinking. >> that represents the blinks. >> after analyzing the data, the doctor places two small cups directly on to helen's eyes. they are designed to reach the oil glands beneath her eyelids. >> it warms the eye to about jacuzzi temperature. not hot, but comfortable. it melts the oils and using a computer program it applies general tell pressure and expresses the abnormal oils from the glands. >> the procedure takes about twelve minutes and the mild heat does not typically cause any discomfort. once the glands are cleared the eyes again producing oil and moisture. diana had the procedure earlier this year. >> i would say within four days or so i could tell that my eyes did not seem as dry or as uncomfortable. >> the doctor said in severe case it is can take eight to ten

weeks to experience relief, but the improvement often lasts several years. >> i think the whole tech following from beginning to end is revolutionary. >> and for patients like helen it offers the hope of making it through the day without concentrating on taking care of her eyes. >> a home run would be to, actually, have about totally go away, but for now i would just be happy with having good days. >> and carolyn says that an average treatment costs 1600 -- or rather $1,800 and it is not covered by insurance right now. however, dr. mandell points out the improvement can improve expenses ranging from eye drop prescriptions to regular eye appointments. we bundle up in the bay area and it feels like spring on the east coast. temperatures in the 60s over a broad area of the ohio valley and the southeast. today temperatures could reach 70 degrees from southern virginia to florida. in all, more than 40 cities could tie or break record-high temperatures this weekend.

but that warm spell won't last. winter-like weather will return there this week. and then we will get some warm weather coming here, right, lisa? that's the way it works. >> you got that right. definitely. and, in fact, we are looking at another very frigid start out there. strong radiational cooling as we head outside right now. mt. tam, some of the coldest temperatures in the north bay and also the east bay valleys have been dropping into the 20s. yesterday they broke a record, low temperature at the tahoe valley airport. it was minus 12. the old record minus 7. right now in truckee, minus 13 and minus 10 at the tahoe valley airport. live doppler 7hd not picking up anything in the way of cloud cover. but we have a few areas of cloud up in in sonoma county.o% we are dry and clear and we will stay that with a not only the week ahead but into next weekend. freeze warning until 8:00 for the north bay valleys, the santa clara valley, the east bay and

the bay shoreline. peninsula and up toward point rays. temperatures much more modified, around 40 degrees san francisco. 25 santa rosa. napa. and 27 in concord. good morning fairfield, 29 for you and 30 in livermore, as well as san jose and los gatos. the coast right now not bad. we take you down to the central coast. how about 32 degrees in santa cruz and salinas. it's 27 in gilroy. so a definitely chilling out all across the bay and another frosty start for tomorrow. so freeze warning and frost advisories likely again overnight tonight. we are colder in napa, fairfield and fremont, everywhere except half moon bay this morning. bundle up out there with the freezing temperatures. we will take a bit to warm up. once again, upper 40s to low 50s. so below the average, but by the middle of the work week into the end of the work week, not only

bringing back to average temperatures but we will be milder than that with numbers near 60 by thursday and friday and next weekend look pretty mild. but in between now and then, it's cold high pressure with the origin of the air mass up in alaska. we are looking at the lack of wind and the lower dewpoints, allowing for those cold temperatures in the valleys as the old colder air drains to the valleys. 27 in tahoe, 61 sacramento. not quite as cold in sacramento. they have a bit of a wind this morning. 58 in los angeles today. back home once again very little change with those upper 40s from the livermore valley. 50 in richmond. plenty of sunshine san francisco, 50 and 51 palo alto and tonight we will get a little bit of wind in the north bay. but still it's not going to upset that aidiation natural cooling and we will be very cool again. 52 salinas. we are talking more 20s and 30s by the water. upper 30s san francisco and we will looking for some of those
